The MAG58, has seen active service within Australian Regular Army Infantry Battalions for many years. They were ideal for The specialist Heavy Weapons Platoons in the Support Company of each Australian Regular Army Infantry Battalion & were used for 'raining death' by setting up numerous MAG58s, on what was called 'Fixed Lines' (the MAG58s were used to 'rain death' on entire grid squares to kill or flush out the enemy. This was very useful if no mortars were able to be assigned to the troops outside of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) also known these days as 'the Green Zone'. 

In-between the ADF phasing out the M60 work horse also known affectionately as 'The Pig' and eventually settling on the FN Minimi LMG, These MAG58s were primarily designed to be mounted on vehicles & weren't ideal for carrying, however, we also had the MAG58 as a Section Weapon, in this case, they weren't very well balanced for a Gunner to carry as a Section Machine Gun & weren't the easiest to use with a complex 'balancing' system which was responsible for adjusting the rate of fire. These were eventually replaced by the FN Minimi Light Support Weapon for infantry sections & platoons, much to our pleasure! The MAG58 was & still is a very effective weapons platform for indirect fire support, or for being vehicle mounted.
